The Magic of Sprouted Seeds – Darren Scerri

The Magic of Sprouted Seeds – Darren Scerri

Many fanciers ask me:

What is the secret behind my successful breeding seasons?

The answer: Sprouted Seeds!

Incorporating sprouted seeds into your breeding regimen provides a natural and highly beneficial food source that supports all aspects of breeding success, from energy levels and reproductive health to immunity and overall vitality.

Enhanced Nutritional Value

Sprouted seeds have significantly increased nutritional content. The germination process activates enzymes that break down stored nutrients, making vitamins, minerals, and proteins more bioavailable.

This means that birds receive a concentrated source of essential nutrients, including B complex vitamins, vitamin C, and amino acids, which are vital for egg production and chick development.

Sprouts are rich in vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, boosting a bird’s immune system, energy levels, and cellular health.

Boosted Energy Levels

Sprouted seeds are rich in carbohydrates and are easier to digest than dry seeds, providing a quick and sustained energy source.

This is vital for breeding Glosters that need to maintain high activity levels and metabolic functions. The extra energy supports birds during mating, nest building, and egg incubation, promoting reproductive success.

The high-quality proteins and amino acids in sprouts also encourage healthy feather growth, tissue repair, and overall development, particularly important for moulting and growing birds.

Improved Reproductive Health

The increased vitamin and mineral content in sprouted seeds promotes healthy reproductive systems, supporting ovary function in hens and sperm production in males.

Essential fatty acids, often found in sprouted seeds, are crucial for hormone production and maintaining reproductive organ health, contributing to higher fertility rates and the production of strong, healthy eggs.

Better Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

Sprouted seeds are easier to digest, as the germination process breaks down complex carbohydrates and proteins into simpler, more digestible forms.

This reduces the strain on the bird’s digestive system and ensures better nutrient absorption, boosting overall health and energy levels in breeding birds.

Hydration and Moisture

Maintaining hydration during the breeding season is crucial for egg production and chick development.

Sprouted seeds have a higher water content compared to dry seeds, helping to keep birds  hydrated and reducing the risk of dehydration during the stressful breeding period. This added moisture is particularly beneficial for female birds during egg formation and incubation.

Increased Natural Foraging Behaviour

Feeding our Glosters sprouted seeds stimulates their natural foraging instincts, keeping them mentally engaged and reducing stress levels.

Stress can negatively impact breeding, so maintaining a low-stress environment helps improve breeding outcomes. The act of picking through the sprouts to eat promotes physical activity and overall well-being.

Stronger Immunity

Sprouted seeds contain enzymes and antioxidants that support a bird’s immune system, which is particularly important during the breeding season when birds are more susceptible to illness due to increased physical demands and hormonal changes.

A strong immune system reduces the risk of disease and helps birds remain healthy throughout the breeding period.

The Correct and Safe Method for Sprouting

  1. In a clean glass container, place a small amount of seeds and fill with water up to the top of the container. (The seeds should fill one-third of the container.) Use 25% seeds and 75% clean, ambient temperature water.
  1. Soak the seeds for no more than 6 hours.
  2. Change the water frequently. The more often the water is changed, the more the seeds will absorb clean water (change it about 6 times).
  3. Once the soaking time is over, rinse the seeds thoroughly under running water for about a minute.
  1. Place the seeds in a sieve (a larger sieve is better, as it allows more air circulation) and set it on a clean towel.
  2. The towel will absorb any water that collects between the seeds and the sieve. (Skipping this step can cause water trapped between the sieve and the seeds to develop Mold.)
  3. Offer the seeds when they have just started sprouting and avoid letting them grow too much.
  4. If the seeds are being served alone and not mixed with soft food, they must be dry and not wet.
