The end of an era – The last Glosterspezialschau

The end of an era – The last Glosterspezialschau

The 25th and last Glosterspezialschau, Harsum/Asel on 11th November 2023.

Judges: Keith Baker, Martyn Fairfield, and Eddie Wells.

We felt privileged that this was our fourth time of judging this show, but also saddened that it would be the last time, as it was to be the final one to be held.

As previously, we were generously hosted by Walter Wedig and his wife Margret at their lovely home in Harsum. Their hospitality was very much appreciated – especially on Friday night when the exhibitors were invited to a pre-show buffet and drinks evening.

After a restful night’s sleep, we were taken to the show venue where Margret was in charge of food and refreshments and the bar which was very welcome, and we enjoyed a hearty breakfast.

Walter and his daughter Nina did an excellent job of the show administration providing a well-run show as always.

Keith, Eddie and I began judging assisted by Gregor Pott and his team of volunteers. There were over 600 birds with entries from all over Europe including Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Denmark. We found the birds to be of high standard with good type and feather quality.

By about 2.00 we had completed the initial judging and we moved onto awarding the specials.

A friendly awards ceremony followed for the winning birds’ owners, and then a presentation followed for Walter, Margret and Nina for their hard work over 25 shows.

Keith, Eddie and I would like to thank Walter and his family for their hospitality, friendship and dedication to the Gloster canary fancy over the years and wish them much happiness in the future.

We would also like to thank Gregor and his wife Kerstin for their help during the show (and Kerstins translator skills!)

We say Auf weidersehen und viel gluck
