This is the easiest and only sure-fire way to identify a cock from a hen. The cocks sing and in general the hens do not.
By singing this is a full-bodied song with full movement in the throat. The hens will call, and chirp, some hens will
sing but generally as adult birds when their gender has already been established.

Generally, within an established stud of birds the cocks are larger and bolder than the hens.

Colour

Cocks tend to show more colour, especially within the dimorphic pattern of the plumage as shown below. In the canary this
is shown as more intensive colouring around the face, on the head, in the bib, on the wing buts and
around the rump. This is easier to see in light birds and is clearly identified on the cock and hen
New Colours below, but harder to identify in darks.

Vent Identification

The vent of a cock bird is generally more pronounced especially when they are in breeding condition.
However, this is difficult to determine when the birds are not in breeding condition and when you are
not comparing a cock with a hen.

Vent Trimming

To successfully trim, take the bird in hand, having it on its back. I find that it is easier to trim birds if I have the head
pointing towards my body with the tail pointing out. The first thing I do is blow the feathers away from the vent area.

This serves two purposes:
1) Gives you a visual inspection of the vent area for readiness to breed.
2) Lets you view the guide feathers

It is essential that these feathers are not trimmed or pulled out.

HEN bird preparation: I identify the guide feathers, and start trimming the feathers just in front of the

vent area (belly side of the vent) ( see illustration). Do not trim in the direction of the belly. For if the hen is in breeding
condition or nearing it, you will notice as you blow the feathers out of the way, the belly area is becoming barer as
she approaches optimal breeding condition.

This is the brooding area and the feathers are normally lost in this area so that the hen can have the eggs in
direct contact with her skin surface. This provides for maximum heat to the eggs and the surround feathers will
trap this heat in to incubate the eggs.

After trimming just behind the vent I proceed to the side of the vent area. Here you want to take off feather bulk so
that those feathers do not overlay onto the guide feathers. I then trimmed towards the tail area. During the
trimming process I will keep blowing the feathers in the vent area to keep reassuring that the guide feathers are
out of the way of the scissors.

The position of the eye of a hen is generally higher than a cock bird. Again, this is difficult to determine unless
you are comparing a cock with a hen and especially difficult with coronas.

Feather Striation

On a dark bird it is possible to look at the striations of the feathers i.e., the center darker portion of the feather.
A hen will tend to show more dark striations. Looking at the birds above the hen (right) carries the dark striations all the way to the beak.
With the cock (left) the feathers above the beak show less striations.

With all these methods available nothing is 100% guaranteed. Many an experienced fancier will admit to
pairing two cocks or two hens together at the start of the breeding season.

The ground colour of the bird, there are 3 types: Buff, Yellow and White.

The amount of dark feathering, can be 0% (Clear) all the way to 100% (Self) The standard classification has one

up to 75% dark and over 75% dark. The Gloster classification describes a bird under 75% dark as

Buff and a bird over 75% dark as a Three Parts Dark (TPD).

 This borderline is sometimes difficult, for even experience exhibitors, to determine. Some judges have different opinions as
to what is a TPD and what is a Buff. 
If the decision is borderline, then most judges will give the
exhibitors decision the benefit of any doubt.

Grizzle: Displayed as slight freckling of what would be the dark feathers on the bird this can be green or cinnamon. 
It can also manifest in Yellow and White ground birds these must be shown in their respective ground colour
classes (Yellow & White) only Buff Grizzles should be shown in the grizzle class.

NOTE: Pairing two dominant whites together will result in 25% of the young dying. This is because the dominant white gene is lethal when it is present
on both sides of the pairing. Also because fawn has the dominant white gene this same principle 
applies. A youngster produced from a
dominant white ground which is not white ground (i.e. normal) will not carry the lethal gene as it is not sex 
linked like the cinnamon gene.
