Greek Gloster Club

Greek Gloster Club

Greek Gloster Club is the unique Greek Canary Club dedicated to the Gloster.

The G.G.C. aims to promote the keeping and breeding of Gloster canaries, the acquaintance between Greek breeders who maintain the breed, informing them for the latest news of the hobby and organizing Gloster shows.

It was founded in 2009, after a long period of conversation among Gloster breeders of that time. Some of these first persons who wanted to establish something new for Greece that time were the late Kostas Rosopoulos, Fotis Stathopoulos, George Christakakis, Spyros Giannopoulos, Chris Zervas, Antonis Almalis and Dimitris Champidis.

The strong core of this team had one vision – to establish a club dedicated to the Gloster and according to the IGBA’s main guidelines. Nowdays we have many good breeders in the club and it would be unfair to mention only few of them.

Τhe G.G.C. has an administrative council and no formal registration or subscription to it. Also has no specific coding rings and so each member can use the rings supplied by other Greek societies where they are as formal members. The only requirement for participation in the club is keeping this breed and having the interest of spreading his love for Gloster canaries to other bird keepers.

The first exhibition in Greece, with around 200 exhibits, held in Thessaloniki on 9-10-11 01/2009. Judges were Nick J. Barrett and his wife Annalain, who raise Gloster canaries from the 1950s and their name is connected with the breed closely. The judgment was in the English way such as the classification of birds.

It was very nice the statement which was made for this event to the reissue of the book” The Gloster Fancy Canary” by Annalain & Nick Barrett. Page VI – ” I judged in Greece early in 2009 and I met fanciers who were eager to learn and were so enthusiastic. This augurs well for the future.”

Till now, this operating model seems to have outstanding results:

• 12 shows (including 2022 show)

• almost 400 birds at every of the last shows

• increasing number of breeders every year (despite the continuous crisis in Greece which affected everything including hobby)

• 4 IGBA Greek Judges: Nektarios Dritsas / Sotiris Fasoulis / Fotis Stathopoulos / Evaggelos Fotos
