Following some less than complimentary, or indeed factual, social media interaction, the committee of the International Gloster Breeders Association deem it necessary to try to make it clear who or what the IGBA is, “its” functionality and what “it” is trying to do.
So, who or what is the IGBA?
Simply put it is an amalgam of bird fanciers with a common purpose. Formed in 1966 a world-wide community devoted to keeping, breeding and the welfare of Gloster Canaries.
It is not any individual or small group seeking any gain, “it” is run by duly elected officers and a committee who volunteer their time for the benefit of the members and fanciers worldwide.
What it is not is an organisation that represents all Gloster clubs, societies, associations.
True it has the largest active membership in the world of any Gloster organisation; and hence may be perceived to have a greater influence on the fancy than any other Gloster organisation worldwide.
False it does not “control” the direction of the Fancy for example setting standards.
The old Gloster Convention was set up to fulfil that role which has been replaced by the current governing body the Gloster Fancy Canary Council UK (GFCC UK).
Following a poll of the whole IGBA membership the decision was made Not to Affiliate to the GFCC UK. That is not to say it will not in the future, the committee believe it is up to the entire membership to make this decision and each member having their own reasons for and against.
Regarding the GFCC UK pictorial model, contrary to some statements this has not been approved by the IGBA or, as we understand, many other Gloster specialist clubs. The new model was approved by the GFCC UK council members present at the last meeting held in 2016.
True “it” is in the process of updating “its” logo. The committee have requested designs from members for consultation, these may or may not include outline drawings. Simple as that nothing more nothing less.
The logo will have no connection to the pictorial model set by the GFCC UK.
Submissions were open for viewing at IGBA 2021 Date: 16 / 17 October Venue: Chesterfield.
On the subject of its finances NO monies have “gone missing”. Annual reports and accounts are professionally prepared and externally verified “audited” as to correctness, presented to members at AGM and published in the Year Book.
“Its” functionality, the quality of being suited to serve a purpose well; practicality, is ably proven by the active members who are the organisation, currently almost 500 worldwide and 46 Affiliate / Patronage Clubs / Societies /Associations worldwide.
What “it” is trying to do is to promote the keeping, breeding and exhibiting of the diminutive type canary known as the Gloster Canary by providing a vehicle for all Gloster fancier to come together in a single common unified purpose.
The IGBA committee request that Gloster fanciers who participate in social media, please THINK – check your facts before you consider posting anything that may be negative, derogatory, or misleading. Publishing incorrect facts or hearsay can lead to further problems for the publisher, negativity does the fancy no good it merely creates bad feeling.
The IGBA, and our fancy, needs positive publicity, active involvement, and commitment by the members in order to have a bright future. There is no place for negativity, disharmony is a one-way street to the inevitable ultimate cessation of the Fancy.
Finally to all non-members you can make a difference join the Association.
